Of the property tax paid in the city, 11% goes to the city, 32% goes to the county, 10% goes to the state, and 47% goes to the school districts. Sam Jones was elected in 2005 as the first African-American mayor of Mobile. The three at-large commissioners each required a majority vote to win.
The H. L. Hunley, the first submarine to sink an enemy ship, was built in Mobile.
